BPSC Main Syllabus: Combined (Written) Competitive Examination 

BPSC Main Syllabus 2026: The Bihar Public Service Commission Combined Main (Written) Competitive Examination syllabus is designed to test in-depth knowledge and analytical skills across five main papers. The BPSC Mains examination consists of five descriptive papers total 900 marks (excluding qualifying papers).

BPSC Main Syllabus

General Hindi (100 marks) 

This paper is based on the secondary level of the Bihar School Examination Board. You must score at least 30% marks to qualify. 

  • Essay Writing: 30 Marks.
  • Grammar: 30 Marks (sentence correction, antonyms, synonyms).
  • Sentence Construction: 25 Marks.
  • Précis Writing/Summarisation: 15 Marks. 

General Studies Paper I (300 Marks)

This paper focuses on history, culture, and data interpretation.

  • Modern History of India & Indian Culture: Covers the mid-19th century onwards with a focus on Bihar.
  • Bihar’s Role in Freedom Struggle: Santhal Uprising, 1857 Rebellion, Birsa Movement, Champaran Satyagraha, and Quit India Movement.
  • Art Forms: Mauryan art, Pal art, and Patna Kalam paintings.
  • Key Personalities: Knowledge of Gandhi, Tagore, and Nehru.
  • Current International and National Events: Global and national events of importance.
  • Statistical Analysis, Graphs, and Diagrams: Testing ability to draw conclusions from data. 

General Studies Paper II (300 Marks)

This paper covers governance, economy, and science applications. 

  • Indian Polity: The political system in India and Bihar, including Panchayati Raj and the Constitution.
  • Indian Economy & Geography of India: National and state-level planning, economic development, and physical/social geography.
  • Role of Science & Technology: The impact of technological advancements on the development of India and Bihar, specifically applied aspects. 

Essay Paper (300 Marks)

Introduced as a critical scoring area, candidates choose one topic from each of the three sections. 

  • Section I: Social, economic, political, religious, or administrative issues.
  • Section II: Moral, philosophical, and hypothetical topics, including national themes like “Digital India”.
  • Section III: Bihar-specific topics, including popular proverbs and local sayings. 

Optional Subject (100 Marks)

Candidates must choose one subject (e.g., History, Geography, Public Administration, Sociology) from a list of Optional Subjects. This paper is now objective-type (MCQ) and qualifying in nature for the Integrated CCE, though it may vary for specific technical posts. 

Candidates for the BPSC Combined Competitive Examination must choose one optional subject from the following list of subjects. For the Integrated CCE, this paper is MCQ-based and qualifying in nature (100 marks), with questions at the Honours level.
